Piles treatment by Dr. Prashanth J V

What are piles ?

What are piles & how to prevent them

Piles are a collection of tissue and veins that become swollen and inflamed.  These can vary in size and are found inside or outside the anus.  Chronic constipation, heavy unguided lifting, chronic diarrhoea, pregnancy, and stress are few of the many factors that cause piles at the time of passage of stool.

Diagnosis

Piles diagnosis requires a physical examination by a doctor. Haemorrhoids (Piles) are classified from stage I to IV. In stageIII or IV, a doctor might deem it necessary to perform a surgery. A proper physical examination is the most common approach used by doctors to diagnose piles.

What To Expect?

As a doctor examines the patient’s anus, they may ask about:

  • History of piles in the family?
  • Any traces of blood in the stool or any traces of mucus?
  • Have you lost weight in recent months?
  • Is there any significant change in bowel movements?

Internal piles can only be detected by the doctor using a proctoscope or a digital rectal examination (DRE). A proctoscope can be described as a specialized hollow tube that is illuminated, allowing the health specialist to analyze the anal canal closely.  They can also take a sample of tissue from the rectum for testing purposes

The sample can be tested and analyzed.  If the patient with the piles is suspected of having another digestive disease, the doctor may have to perform a colonoscopy. It can also be a precursor to colorectal cancer.

Treatment:

In most cases, the patient can overcome the initial stages of piles without medical help or invasive surgery. However, there are still treatments designed out for people specifically who are in discomfort and experiencing itching.

1. Lifestyle Changes

In the initial stages, doctor usually recommends adopting a different yet healthy lifestyle. Following are things they might suggest in the lifestyle change.

  • Diet:

There may be piles due to stress during bowel movements.  One of the common causes of constipation is every day and excessive stress. Dietary changes may help to maintain the regularity and softness of stools.  This includes taking the daily recommended value of fibre by including fruits and vegetables in snacks or main lentils for breakfast based on bran.  Besides suggesting to reduce and stop consumption of caffeine, health specialists would focus more on increasing water intake.

  • Bodyweight:

A healthy weight is a key to keep chances of piles at bay and reduce their severity.  Not to forget, exercise plays a huge role in preventing and treating piles; thus, doctors advise exercising and avoid putting excessive pressure on the stool.

2. Medicine

There are several medication options available to further manage the symptoms of a person with piles. Himalayan Pilex tablets are a reliable Ayurvedic solution for haemorrhoids. Pilex helps reduce the size of the pile mass, relaxes mucous membranes, heals inflamed skin and controls bleeding. It also provides immediate relief from symptoms such as bleeding from the rectum and pain and itching.

3. Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy can be classified as an invasive surgery, which uses quite smaller incisions. It is named after the device laparoscope, which is a medical tool having a small video camera to capture the condition inside and a light at the end to illuminate it. The surgeon can insert the camera through the incision to track down the progress of the inflammation by seeing it in the video monitor.

If these tools wouldn’t have existed, the surgeons had to open up more. Thanks to the special equipment, there is no need for the surgeons to go into the body and do more cutting. If you have ever heard about the term “minimally invasive surgeries,” then you must know Laparoscopic surgery is one of its type and gallbladder surgery and gynaecological operations were the first two most common examples of it before.
